It's a Better Feeling Day

Cayman is feeling well enough to exert crabbiness today. We have seen her level of appetite, energy, and interaction return to about 90% of her baseline.

I know that all sounds so good. And it is, and it isn't at the same time.

Today feels like an exact repeat of what Wednesday was for her.

A quick recap: Tuesday night Cayman got sick. We headed to Ann Arbor. By the time we arrived she was better. So we stayed at a hotel and then returned home Wednesday morning. On Wednesday she went to preschool and had a great day. Nothing out of the ordinary. Very early Thursday morning she got sick again. She was found unresponsive and the vomiting had returned. Late in the evening she was feeling better again.

See the up down pattern the last few days has been?

This is quite bothersome. The only answer that I come to of what would make her so sick, she's being life flighted one minute and the next she's walking the hospital halls laughing, points more to Cayman's pattern of a neurological disturbance, not viral related. I still have high suspicions that Mr. Shunt is up to no good. But until that is more apparent to everyone, especially the doctors, she will not be going to the O.R. So for now we're just hanging out, waiting on another episode of decline in her, if it reappears.

It's a really strange, erratic bucket of emotions. When Cayman is acting good I feel nervous about that. It's hard to think of going home without feeling a complete confidence her shunt is working at its best and will continue. But when she starts to cry for reasons we cannot find a cause for and lays her head down on us, my stomach starts twisting at the thought of the O.R.

Worse case scenario is not that Cayman has a shunt revision right now. It's that we go home and find out a shunt revision should have been done.

It's easier dealing with such matters when you know exactly what you're dealing with. This is hard.

So it is a better feeling day for Cayman. But I am just not sure that necessarily constitutes as a "good day" in this case.

Glad to hear she's 90% back to herself, but really praying for answers. This may sound stupid, but is it possible that her "unresponsiveness" and vomiting could have been the aftermath of a seizure?

I hope they keep her there until you all know 100% what is wrong.

I hate the wait and see and all the emotional ups and downs that are the reality of us who have children with shunts.

Sometimes they would say the shunt was clogged and then it unclogged on it's own. I finally came to the conclusion that a mother's gut feeling is better than some medical tests.

I do hope Cayman's shunt is not the problem. It is no fun having someone do surgery on your brain multiple times.

Just know you are not alone the pit in your stomach is shared by all with hydrocephalic children. It is not a comfort I know. But your family is in our prayers.
Sincerely,
Stephanie

I'm so glad to hear she's doing better, but I also know how frustrating it can be not to have any answers. Praying you get some direction soon.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do at all for you. If you need anything done around here, or help with Kobe..Anything. Please don't be afraid to ask!

Kristen and Mike- I just wanted you to know we are all praying for Cayman at Preschool and miss her greatly. I am happy to hear she is feeling better - but bitter sweet feelings for you because of the unknown. I pray answers will be given and comfort will be felt. She will get the care she needs to be 100%... Big hugs to her and "horrays!"
