A Happier Post

Hi! You are still here! Infrequent blogging has chased away more readers this way. Wouldn't you agree it's passed time for a new post? Something, let's say, more happy to be greeted by than that drab title, "The Big Bad Seizure".

That weekend was a perfect illustration of the expression “Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place.”

The reality was choosing between two sucky options. And really it's the situation that makes it sucky more than the choices, for I feel confident in the direction we have chosen.

One of the worst parts of being a parent of a medically complexed child is the decisions. I am the researcher of therapies, diagnoses, and drugs. I’ve spoken up time and time again in doctor’s offices. I spend sometimes hours late in the night on the computer trying to find the right answers and digging even more when those answers I find are too pat.

But sometimes there’s no great option - there’s no clear choice - but there’s still a decision to be made.

And a jury waiting to pass judgment on the decision.

For us last week we wrestled in the choice whether to place Cayman on a seizure medication or not.

We chose NOT.

Don't mistake that as a choice that we are doing nothing. If those were the only two options - do nothing or take the seizure med - most definitely we would have chosen the seizure medication. For the level of concern for the seizure Cayman had a week ago calls for preparation and prevention.

But I feel really lucky that there's another option available to us, found in the most unlikely place. Another doctor with several phd's behind his name, who gave up teaching to start his own business and has been successfully running it over 25 years. Dr. Saunders chose to practice homeopathic over medical because there's health found in it. Medication only masks the problem until another one eventually pops up. Cayman is on homeopathic medicine that as a newborn was successful at taking away her seizures and hopefully it'll continue with good results now. The best part, no side effects! Just a healthier working brain in the end and a happy, feeling good Cayman. She is doing real good and thus far we have seen no more seizures since that last big one. *Fingers crossed* in hopes there will be no more.

There is oodles of pictures on my camera that need to make their way to my computer and ideally onto this 'ol blog of mine. But that will not be happening for this post. Both kids are watching a Signing Time video right now. They're quiet and calm but soon they will erupt like Vesuvius. And when that happens I do not want to be found in the middle of a post. I have lost more good posts that way, starting many but not finishing them.

And since blogging without pictures, or a video, is just so boring, I pulled out from the saved files a quick topic I planned to blog about sometime ago.

I think it is humorous the way my children love the vacuum cleaner!! It's a huge attraction around here.

Cayman cheers, "Yay!" when I turn it on.

Kobe chases after it. He'd ride the thing if I'd let him.

I always thought children were afraid of these noisy household appliances.

I recall an entry a friend of mine wrote years ago, before I became a mother. A fantastic mother she is, one of the best I know! But does not abound in domestic abilities. She vacuums the floors as little as possible. House work is not appealing to her and is easy to push off til later. As a result, she wrote, her lack of vacuuming caused her baby boy to be terrified of the vacuum cleaner, crying in fear every time it turned on.

If it is frequent exposure to create comfort for babies over these noisy domestic chores then thanks to having a house for sale my children are now crazy-vacuum-cleaning-lovers, as I am held accountable to sweep around here repeatedly. You would think it was the best part of their day when I pull out from broom closet the yellow Dyson and turn on the noisy vortex of cleaning.

Secretly, I kind of like it too. A clean house makes me happy.

I am so glad you posted this video "again". My daughter (she's 2) loves to watch Cayman & Kobe videos. We watch them from the Vimeo site because it's easier for her to navigate by herself. We saw this video when you had it on there a while ago...she loved it. When you took it down of course this is the one she wanted to watch - don't worry we still pumped up your numbers by watching her other favorites. Lol :-) We are praying for you guys. May God bless you today & always!

HAHA!! I love how he just kept following you around. I bet it's easy to miss spots going in circles like that, LOL!

Glad you were able to find a solution for Cayman, so she doesn't have to take seizure medication. Praying that those nasty seizures stay away for good.

Oh I am so happy you came to a decision and you sound happy about you decision. I pray Cayman's seizure stay away. I, too, have to admit we saw the vacuum video a couple weeks ago, and I was anticipating a post to go with it, we all loved watching it. My kids are also a fan of the vaccuum, especially Grant. You are not alone in starting a post then having to abandon it...I currently have 20 unpublished posts from this year. Always started with good intentions but then the kids demand my attentions to be turned away from blogging and back to them. Such as right now, it's cookie day here, Grant and Norah are excited to get baking :)

We always love the videos, too!

And I know what you mean about seemingly endless decisions in long-standing medical difficulties. Sigh. I have to say I 100% understand your decision NOT to go with the seizure meds (and also would have fully supported you if you felt you needed to go that route...YOU know best for your child!).

We've had so many horrible drug reactions at our house that it is a fearful thing putting a new drug "down the hatch" and we will do about anything to avoid it.

I pray this doctor can help Cayman with no side effects...!

Always glad when you can post and always understand when you can't,

I'm glad you have found something that you are comfortable with. I am obviously biased because I am in pharmacy school, but please remember that there is no such thing as "no side effects". Homeopathic medications are not tested by the FDA and are not required to do studies on safety and efficacy like precription drugs are required to do. The advantage with prescription drugs is that we are aware of the likely side effects, whereas with homeopathic medications, there is no data to show side effects or long term effects. Another important point is that homeopathic drugs are not regulated, which means you do not know how much of any ingredient is in the medication. There are no rules or oversight like there are for prescription medications.
Just something to keep in mind.

YAY for a blog post!! I am glad you guys have made a decision for now regarding Cayman and that you are at peace with it. In the end - all any parent wants is what is best for his or her child!! I love that you guys explore all your options and don't just take what the doctors say at face value (not to downplay the doctors or their importance - but you are the best advocate for your child)!

Love the video - Kobe really has the crawling down!! I can't believe how fast he seems to be growing....

Merry Christmas to you all!

That video is so cute! And my kids are still afraid of the vacuum. Kiah likes to turn it on, but still freaks out if it gets too close to him. Simon follows me around to hold him while I vacuum because he doesn't like it, but does want to be with me. So funny!
